Final Fight: Double Impact (PSN/XBLA) Review

Final Fight: Double Impact is a competent package of Arcade brawlers that mixes the classic with the obscure and is worth the ten dollars you'll shell out for it.

With protagonists Cody and Guy appearing in the upcoming Super Street Fighter IV, it makes sense that Capcom would be putting out an update of their beat-em-up classic, Final Fight. Not only has the game received visual and audio updates, but includes some neat new features as well. Rounding out the package is the inclusion of the lesser known brawler Magic Sword, which also benefits from aesthetic updates as well.

The plot for the original Final Fight is pretty basic, Muscular badass Mike Haggar has just become mayor and plans to clean up the crime-infested Metro City. Unfortunately for him, a criminal group known as the Mad Gears kidnapped the Mayor's daughter in retaliation. You play as Haggar, his daughter's sweetheart Cody or his friend Guy and fight your way through hordes of Mad Gear goons.

The arcade cabinet border adds to the retro-feel of the game.

Magic Sword on the other hand is different. You play a buff warrior-type straight out a Robert E. Howard story who must ascend a monster-infested tower, defeat the evil Lord Drokmar and destroy the Black Orb, so light can return to the land.

Apart from the visual and audio updates, the games themselves remain relatively untouched with the same brawler action that made the original arcade games so addicting and fun. The visuals have been retouched so everything looks a little smoother, but the audio has been completely redone by composer Simon Viklund, who was also responsible for Bionic Commando Rearmed's awesome tunes.

One of the many bosses that impede your climb up the Tower.

The game has both local and online multiplayer and you 're given the ability to "jump in" where you find someone who is playing solo and instantly join their current game. It's a neat feature. The game also adds a variety of unlockable goodies like concept art, fan art and videos for completing certain tasks in both games. This add some re-playability to both games' rather short lengths.

Overall, there's a good amount of content for what you're paying for and the updates to the game (the audio especially) give both titles a fresh feel and some added challenge, the ability to jump in with other people is a neat feature as well. The game is available on both the Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network for 800 Microsoft Points or $10. If you like some classic asskicking action, downloading Final Fight: Double Impact is a good choice to make.
