Casting Updates on The First Avenger: Captain America

Marvel has now confirmed Chris Evans to portray the title character in their upcoming feature The First Avenger: Captain America. Evans has only lightly commented on the issue since the announcement, but a press conference for his other comic book movie The Losers allowed him to talk about the character from the source material.

"It's a fun character," Evans said. "I think the story of Steve Rogers is great. He just happens to be a comic-book hero, too, and that's where I'm coming from."

Evans mentioned that he was not actually required to read lines for the part of Steve Rogers/Captain America. Instead he said it was both luck and the faith of the people at Marvel.

"I didn't actually read for it," Evans said. "But I knew a lot of the guys at Marvel. We had an existing relationship. It's just luck."

Other casting information has also been disclosed in the last few weeks. Marvel confirmed a report from The Hollywood Reporter that Sebastian Stan was chosen for the part of Captain America's sidekick, Bucky. James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes is a follower/mascot for Captain America who joins him on his missions throughout World War II.

Variety said actor Hugo Weaving is no longer in the process of playing Captain America's archnemesis, Red Skull, but has apparently won the role. The character of the Red Skull is a Nazi agent who possesses the same superhuman abilities as Captain America, frequently doing battle against him. Neither Marvel or Weaving have confirmed their involvement in the film.

Then from fiery foes to fiery lovers, the role of Captain America's love interest Peggy Lee seems to be in the final stages of casting. According to E! Online, British actresses Alice Eve and Hayley Atwell are having their second screen tests today in London.

The First Avenger: Captain America is due to release July 22, 2011.
