Apple Announces iPhone OS 4.0 - And Says F*ck You to Older Clients

Today, Apple announced their newest software for their popular iPhone mobilephone/game platform/whatever.

Apple released the iPhone in 2007, and since its debut, users have been crying over the lack of multitasking in the devices OS. Well, Apple listened, after 3 years, and has finally integrated multitasking into the newest version of the iPhone OS - version 4.0.

BUT

If you are a user of the original iPhone, or the iPhone 3G, along with any of the users of the first and second generation iPod touch's, apple has decided to say screw you. Users of the listed device will still get iPhone OS 4.0, but they will be unable to use many of the new features, including the highly demanded multitasking feature. Sorry, but unless you have an iPhone 3GS or a 3rd generation iPod Touch, apple thinks you're chopped liver.

As for the other updates, there are a few that are worth mentioning. Apple has made the OS able to use a folder system on the home pages, so that you can store your apps in the folders instead of the main home pages. While on iPhone OS 3 and previous you could only hold up to 180 apps at a time on your multipurpose doodad, Apple says that you will now be able to hold over 2000 apps on a single device (if you have the memory needed that is.).

Along with the folder system, Apple has created an integrated mail system, allowing you to get all your emails from all your accounts sent to one mailbox on your device.

Apple has really been pushing its devices as gaming platform's recently, and they've created an Xbox live like feature called GameCenter. This feature hosts leader boards, achievements, friend lists and multiplayer game invites.

Also, the new OS will incorporate the new apple feature iBook, which made its debut with th iPad. Now all users of Apple mobile devices can use this to read books on their machine.

While the additions Apple has made to the OS for the iPhone, I think its a little stingy of them to not include the previous versions of the iPhone and iPod Touch in the update for many features. The iPhone and iPod Touch will receive this update in the summer, while the iPad will get it in the fall.
