It astounds me to no end that there is actually an animation studio somewhere in the world that would do such a thing. What possibly could have entered the minds of these filmmakers to use one of the most tragic disasters in recorded history and twist into supposedly children’s entertainment?
Surprisingly, Legend of the Titanic is in fact one of three animated films about the famous “unsinkable” ship. Most of those films, however unrelated, carry nearly identical plots and themes. In the case of the latter, it’s approximately zero.
When the RMS Titanic (apologies, in this historically accurate film it’s the S.S. Titanic) readies to ship off, it carries along a several characters bound for adventure. There’s Elizabeth, the wealthy daughter bound to marry a greedy whaler; Juan, a Gypsy prince determined to win her heart and Top Connors, a mouse sailor who can’t help but cause shenanigans aboard the ship.
There’s also the characters that pop up quite randomly throughout the film and have story arcs as long as one of the curves in the golden McDonald’s “M”. Take for example Tentacles the Octopus, not only does he appear very close to the end of the film, but his involvement and actions are so disgusting that any adult viewer should question the morality of this film’s writer.
Throughout this entire plot, you will not believe how many absurd circumstances occur simply out of awkward plot convenience. Children will find the plot of “whaling rights” complicated and see little imagination in the concepts of these one-dimensional characters. Most of these lines sound so rushed it’s like the actors haven’t even realized what they’ve said.
The animation is low budget, which is the only understandable flaw of this scarcely known movie. However the musical melodies (and lyrics) are quite familiar to that of songs used in Disney classics. No matter what age you are, the Legend of the Titanic will leave you feeling robbed of a portion of your childhood by the end.
Even though the thought of turning the Titanic disaster into a concept for kids is awful in itself, it would have at least been something bittersweet if there was any effort into this production. The plot is like a bunch of cliché ideas being bounced around a room, the characters are as non-relatable as they are nonsensical and there is no lesson to be learned by the end.
Let us hope that this film remains at the bottom of the ocean.
