Hydro Thunder Hurricane (XBLA) Review

The Summer of Arcade 2010 just keeps getting better. From the dark Limbo, we go in a completely opposite direction and pilot high-speed watercraft in Hydro Thunder Hurricane.

After a lack of boat-themed experiences, we are graced with Hydro Thunder Hurricane on the Xbox Live Arcade. Developed by Vector Unit and Published by Microsoft Game Studios. we got a taste of Hydro Thunder Hurricane. which is the perfect game for beating the summer heat.

Hydro Thunder Hurricane gives us another taste of the Arcade-style boat racing that many of us loved in the Classic Midway arcade games. The single player features four race modes you can do to earn credits, which enable you to unlock more tracks to do race on and better boats to further feed your need for speed.

In Race Mode you simply race against the CPU boats and try to win the race to get the most credits you can so you can get more stuff. If you want to make bank, you've got to race on the higher levels with the big boys. Ring Master lets you race through rings in a time trial type of race where there are no computer opponents. Gauntlet races put the player through a gauntlet of bombs and try to beat the clock without exploding. And finally Championship races put the player through a series of different races and the player has to beat the CPU racers to get the highest score at the end of the Championship.

Multiplayer modes let players race against each  other for a better challenge than just racing the CPU racers. Players can either compete in traditional racing mode, or in Rubber Ducky mode where the players are split into two teams and are put against each other to do whatever it takes to get their duck over the finish line first.

Holy shit! A Viking!

Visuals for Hydro Thunder Hurricane are very good for an arcade racer. The graphics are bright and colourful and give the game a real happy feel. Environments in the game look great especially when they are causing havoc and destruction on the track. Things such as giant red-eyed vikings swinging their axe at you, to giant sea snakes bursting from the water trying to destroy you.

Audio in the game features average sounds effects. The sounds of the boats and crashes your boat may get into are nothing too get excited over. The music that plays in the back ground is hardly noticable, but still not too bad since it doesn't distract you from what's going on. The best part of the audio is the announcer at the start of each race who gives you the countdown and shouts GO! at you.

So overall, Hydro Thunder Hurricane offers a fun arcade-style boat racing game with excellent visuals and a great multiplayer racing experience. The audio might be a bit weak, but for only 1200 Microsoft Points how can you go wrong? If you want a fun, easy to get into game, go download Hydro Thunder Hurricane on XBLA. Aso don't forget that if you buy all the Summer of Arcade 2010 titles, you get redeemed the points for one of them.
