Date Night Review
Two of our generation's biggest names in comedy have coupled up to bring us barrels of laughter in the Steve Carell and Tina Fey film, Date Night.
The film revolves the worry that plagues many couples in this day and age; is our marriage getting stale? Well it can’t be anything that a few political conspiracies, car chases and potential mob hits won’t solve. That’s the adventure that Phil (Carell) and Claire Foster (Fey) fall into, after one dinner that’s supposed to relieve them of their boring routine turns into one night they’ll never forget. A simple mistaken identity at a restaurant turns into a fight for survival across New York City, where it only can go from bad to worse.
Carell and Fey’s comedic styles mingle together brilliantly in this film, giving them both a healthy competition for who the funniest is as well as making them feel like an everyday husband and wife. Both of them have backbone to their characters and don’t feel like two big jokes and it allows them to flow smoothly through the slapstick comedy.
The film gets tense fast, which provides the movie a genuine feel for the suspense and action that take place for its majority. Yet it walks a delicate balance of remaining funny at the same time. The comedy runs with every mood and even gives the audience a couple scenes of meaningful insight. It feels like a real couple with real problems.
For the most part, Date Night remains a short but sweet tale of what it means to jumpstart a marriage back to life. It’s a surprising, suspenseful and all in all charming comedy that will leave couples wondering with laughter just how bad their problems can be in comparison to these two.
