Hidden Gems - Heavenly Guardian (WII)

A port of a PS2 title of the same name, Heavenly Guardian is a fun and sometimes frustrating Overhead shooting adventure by UFO Interactive games.

You play as Sayuki, a Japanese Snow Goddess who is in love with a mortal boy in the village she watches over. Your mortal lover falls under a mysterious curse and it's up to Sayuki to travel the world, fight a variety of sinister spirits and find the cure for this mysterious affliction.

At first glance, the game may seem like an old-school, overhead adventure game in the same vein as the classic Legend of Zelda titles, but this is not the case. In fact, Heavenly Guardian has more in common with games like Smash TV, strangely enough. The game is a combination of multi-directional shooter and classic adventure title. You explore several levels, shooting up a variety of creatures and objects, all the while collecting point bonuses and upgrades for your ice-shots. You eventually make your way to a huge boss and move on to another level. The gameplay is rather difficult and can be played by aiming with the wiimote or by using the control stick on the the Nunchuk.

Though he's simple, the first boss can kill you easily if you're not careful.

Part of the game's charm comes from it's hand-drawn artstyle. Though it's typically Japanese, it's pretty and many of the monsters and spirits are downright adorable. The game also has a variety of well-designed locales that are fun to playthrough.

All in all, the game isn't anything revolutionary, but if you're looking for a game that's both fun and challenging on a budget, you should seriously consider giving Heavenly Guardian a shot. You can pick it up new for only $10.
