Green Lantern: Casting, Costumes and Character Analysis!

Serious news has been hitting the net lately since the Green Lantern film started production over the last number of weeks.

New cast members have joined the film project. According to Comingsoon.net, Jon Tenney is to play Hal Jordan's father, Martin H. Jordan. Jordan Sr., also a test pilot, is the one who inspired Hal to take up his father's wings when he wasn't growing up under them. Angela Basset, according to Variety, has also signed on to play Dr. Amanda Waller, a government. Waller is a major character in the DC Comics and one who has demonstrated to have more up her sleeve than it may appear.

But what actors be without costumes? Sources have heard rumours that the Green Lantern costume that Ryan Reynolds will be sporting for the movie won't be made of fabric or rubber, it will be made of pixels. CGI is the supposed tailor for Jordan's wardrobe. In the comics, the Green Lantern uniform worn by Jordan is supposed to be made from the same energy found in his Power Ring. According to sources, this will help give the superhero a unique look compared to other DC Comic characters.

"The Green Lantern suit is something that should look alien," said the source. "It needs to seem other worldly. It encompasses any creature that wears the ring, and Hal Jordan is the first human to ever wear the suit."

In other news, Mark Strong, who will portray Jordan's alien mentor Sinestro, spoke to USA Today about how he will take on the role of the morally grey character.

"Sinestro starts out as Hal Jordan’s mentor," Strong said. "He is a military guy but isn’t immediately bad. It’s the kind of person he is that lends himself to becoming bad over the course of the comics being written, but initially he’s quite a heroic figure."

Strong said he wants to keep Sinestro traditional to the comics, particularly by looking into the one who was the inspiration for the character, the late David Niven.

"That widow’s peak and thin mustache was for some reason originally based on David Niven, and Hal Jordan was based on Errol Flynn," Strong said. "Obviously at the time, whoever was doing the original comics must have looked at them as guys doing very well in the film industry, and based those characters on them. So I would like to do justice to the Sinestro that was conceived for the comic books."

Green Lantern is set to arrive June 17, 2011.
