Freeware Friday - April 9th, 2010

Welcome to the first of many...

Yeah, that's right bitches. Now, let's look at some of the more renowned Freeware titles that are available for you to download.

Cave Story

When you think of Freeware indie games, this is most likely the first game that comes to mind. Cave Story is an Action-Platformer with loose RPG elements. It's a Metroidvania game, so there's lots of upgradable weapons, secret items and areas to explore. The game also has gorgeous 16-bit graphics, an interesting storyline and a pretty awesome soundtrack. Pixel, the Japanese fellow who designed it, put lots of work into it. The game was also released on Wiiware a couple weeks ago with some enhancements and a pricetag of 1200 points. But it's still free on the computer.

Download it for many, many, many different platforms here.

Dwarf Fortress

Are strategy games to simple for you? Is Sim City a game for slow-minded people? If so, Dwarf Fortress is the game for you! The game is split into two modes, one is an adventure title similar to the classic Rougelike adventure titles of yore and the other is the most intense city-building game ever. The micromanagement in this game is ridiculous. The game is presented in glorious ASCII graphics, that alone makes the game worth checking out, even if you're not a strategy buff.

Download the latest version (PC only I'm afraid) here.

La-Mulana

Though I mentioned this when I previewed the upcoming Wiiware version, I feel like sticking this here again. The game is a tribute to the age-old MSX computer. Another Metroidvania title, La-Mulana is an 8-bit ruin-exploring adventure. You and your Indiana Jones-esque adventurer must explore the deadly ruins of La-Mulana. Extreme difficulty and fantastic soundtrack ensue.

You can download it (PC only again) here.

Until Next week.
